Hi Leon,
Following my phone call yesterday, here's a written report of what you heard - just in case you enjoyed hearing it and banging your head against the wall so much that you would like to repeat the experience upon reading this!
I fished from about 12.30 - 15.30 in calm, warm weather which was pleasant after a week or so of grey, drizzle and wind. Below the hut under the trees, as usual, there was plenty of feeding activity. Groups of fish were taking anything hatching, skittering across the surface or just plain floating along. The best fish seemed to be tucked up against the bank as confirmed by a lovely wild brownie of about 2lbs that took a GRHE (CdeC). I could've fished on but reckoned that a short break and then return for what promised to be a good evening rise was a better plan.
Back fishing around 18.30 things seemed a little quiet. I started by the hut where a couple of fished showed but without any real feeding conviction. Then this strange lull was suddenly transformed into a fly eating orgy as stuff seemed to be hatching, mating and falling spent everywhere. What was especially pleasing was that I was catching fish in stretches that have been, piscatorially speaking, relatively quiet this season. Another pleasure was that I only needed to use a simple hackled orange spinner pattern which required minimal drying attention after each catch, cutting down the need to change fly.
The fish were taking emerging BWO, floating BWO and Spurwings, sedges, kitchen sinks, etc. Patience was all that was required to pick through the fish until one was found that would take the hackled fly, and the wait between the takers was not long! Flies were everywhere - in the air with egg sacs, on the water egg laying, hatching and probably telling jokes to one another until a great mouth gobbled them up.
Interestingly, I only took 2 grayling, both around 40cms, and was not bothered by the smaller ones because I think the trout had chased them off to exclusively occupy the feeding hot spots. It was one hell of an evening rise and walking back to the car I asked myself would I have given up the chance of experiencing it if some beautiful, young woman had offered me her body instead. What give up 2 hours of ecstasy for a 3 minute thrill? I might be desperate but such an experience helps to fight it off!
So there were Ephemerella danica; Baetis vernus; Baetis scambus; Serratella ignita; Centroptilum luteolum; Centroptilum pennulatum and yes even Baetis niger all present yesterday.The only living thing that you would usually expect to be on the water at such a time as this but sadly was a notable absence was Hydropsycho leon.

31 Augustus 2010 - Matige belevenissen in de afgelopen augustusmaand
Een overzicht van mijn matige belevenissen in de afgelopen augustusmaand. waardeloos als wel vaker. Het eerste deel van de maand stond er nergens water en was het te warm, in het tweede deel was er teveel water. Het insektenleven schraal. Overal hetzelfde beeld: wat Scambus (kleine olives), silverhorns, een enkele Bwo. Smuts op de Geul, een paar Sulphur duns, nauwelijks activiteit.
In de Ardennen de laagste waterstand in 30 jaar.
20 July 2010 - Twee stekken in het diepe zuiden van Frankrijk
De Orb, 50 km ten noorden van Beziers bij Le Bousquet. Vanaf hier stroomopwaarts zit er forel.
De Vis 50 km ten noorden van Montpellier bij Madiéres. De Vis stroomt door een duizelingwekkende diepe kloof in een fantastisch landschap. Vanaf het gehucht Rosier stroomopwaarts, zoals hier bij Madiéres vang je ook wel eens wat anders dan kopvoorn, nl. forel
De Vis in het cirque de navacelles. In deze 300 meter diepe kloof stroomt de Vis, ver van de bewoonde wereld. Om er te komen moet je heel wat haarspeldbochten nemen.

Maak liever een te korte worp, dan een te lange,om de juiste afstand in te schatten.
Overwerpen met de hoofdlijn is uit den boze.
Verre worpen met een te strakke hengel zijn vaak vis verstorend en meestal onnauwkeurig.
Je kunt beter wat dichterbij gaan staan.
Omkijken bij het dubbel strippen staat interessant, maar is iets voor beginners en nergens voor nodig. Je ziet slechter waar je je vlieg wil laten landen.....
